Visiting Paris in the Winter

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of hosting my Mama on her first visit to Paris. As we strolled the crowd free Champ de Mars, it got me thinking about what a great time it was to visit Paris.

When to come:
Around December 10th ish the Christmas decorations go up. Its also early enough to avoid the Christmas season flight increases.

What to consider:
The reason Champ de Mars was virtually empty was because it was cold and raining. I was bitching the entire time.

The best things about Paris in the winter:

Oysters
October to March is oyster season. You will see them on virtually every street corner, making oysters the Starbucks of Paris. For prime oyster spotting check out Raspail Market.  This is Ina Garten's favorite Parisian market too.

Winter Clothes
Paris is the perfect excuse to bust out your most treasured winter wear. While other cities bundle up in grey's and browns, Parisians seem to do winter right with lots of prints, textures and furs. It's also a great city to experiment with fashion.

How to mix prints like a Parisian:
While there are no rules for mixing prints in Paris, us Americans feel more comfortable with some guidelines to follow so here they are: use the buddy system. Let me explain. When mixing prints, make sure each item in your outfit has at least one other complementing item. The easiest way to do this is to match colors. In my outfit below I'm mixing hound's-tooth, leopard print, and stripes. The common color being black to tie them all together. Then I took inspiration from the pop of brown in my shoes and added a brown faux fur scarf and a brown feather in my hat. And voilà!

Christmas Lights
The city of lights, does Christmas lights right. A quick and festive way to see them up close is to take an open-air night bus tour. They give you a warm beverage and classy lime green blanket to stay warm.

Greyish Skies
Gloomy grey days make for great photos. No pesky sunshine to create shadows and glare.

Sweet Treats
Ok, so this isn't specific to winter, but there's something about Christmas time that make sweet treats even more enjoyable.

And some bonus advice on how to take an outfit from chic to crazy in 5 seconds flat:

Whilst visiting London I picked up a delightful tulle skirt from Top Shop.  I saw someone else pair a similar skirt with jeans and thought it looked very cool so I decided to give it a try. I was quite pleased with the result:

The problem with these risky outfits however, is you can't do anything weird without looking bat shit crazy. That is generally a problem for me. For example, you can't walk around with a huge plastic bag, picking up giant ponies:

The Best (Cheap) Beauty Products in France

My Mom and I are beauty junkies. We're also not opposed to elbowing our way through hoards of people to get a good deal. Put the two together and you have City Pharma, one of the best pharmacies in Paris for buying beauty products. It is full of junkies like ourselves, aggressively shoving other junkies out of the way to get to the last Nuxe Lip Balm. Bring a buddy, some whistles and a list of what you want--the last thing you want to do is browse in this place.

Here are some of my favorite beauty finds in Paris.  All are available at most pharmacies (the places with the green + on the outside) and some are even on Amazon for a premium of course!

La Roche-Posey Cicaplast Baume B5
I have the never sought after dry, yet acne prone skin. How is that even a thing? It makes finding a good moisturizer a challenge to say the least. I looove this stuff. Its not greasy at all, and most importantly it moisturizes great.

Buy it in Paris!

Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser
More like Caudalie anything, because you can't go wrong with this brand. The foaming cleanser in particular is fantastic because its super gentle feeling but easily takes off the reddest of red lipsticks. I'm talking Taylor Swift red.

Buy it here.

Klorane Dry Shampoo
For those days when you just can't stomach another top knot...(note that day has yet to come for me), dry shampoo is your best friend. When I came to Paris I spent my blow dryer money on macarons, so I had to start showering at night. Soon I adopted the French technique of washing your hair every three days. That third day is risky though. Could be beautiful glossy locks, could be a greasy nightmare. On nightmarish days, use dry shampoo.

Buy it in here.

Embryolisse Concentrated Lait Cream
Moisturizes the driest of dry skin. Its kind of like a retinal without the hassle of a prescription. Interestingly enough (and awesomely enough) it can also be used as a cleanser and makeup remover. Making this the perfect travel companion. The cherry on top: it is under 3.3fl oz so it can go in your carry on bag!

Buy it here.

Nuxe Huile Produgieuse Multi Purpose Dry Oil
This stuff... smells so good and so French. It more or less can be used anywhere on your body--including your hair. It leaves your skin dewy and glowing. I've been using it as a detangler and it works like a charm. In what other country can you find body oils at your local pharmacy?

Buy it here.

Nuxe Rêve de Miel Ultra Nourishing Lip Balm
Another wonder from Nuxe (which s quickly growing to be my favorite beauty brand). Put this lip balm on at night and wake up with smooth lips. It can be worn in the day as well, but its super thick so be careful!

Buy it here.

Bioderma Crèaline H2O
I have mixed feelings about this stuff. French women swear by it so I am compelled to love it. Also as you can see I used nearly the whole bottle. But its just a little too gentle for me. Most likely that's because the only ingredient is water.... For some people, it might be just right though.

Buy it here.

Bioderma Créaline H2O Dermalogical Wipes
I much prefer the wipe version of Bioderma. Again, perfect for traveling because they don't technically count as a liquid. Also they clear your face of travel grime really well.

Buy it here.

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL SPF 50+ Sunscreen for Face
To be honest I don't know what half these words mean. Even in English...can't be sure. But I do know I love sun protection and I love how this stuff feels and it isn't greasy or shiny.

Buy it here.

Avène Thermal Water Spray
Again, it's literally just water, but it feels sooo good. Especially midway through a long flight or train ride. Also its thermal water so ya know...that's got to be good.

Buy it here.

L'Occitane Almond Shower Oil
Ok, hands down my favorite beauty product I got in Paris. Yes, L'Occitane is prevalent in the U.S, but its just so expensive. I love this stuff so much I'm bringing two bottles home. It smells delightful--one of those smells where in 20 years I will catch a whiff and think "this reminds me of Paris!" It is also functional: cleans, moisturizes AND can be used as shaving cream. Note: in Pars it is 3 times less expensive than on amazon.

Buy it here.

Bonus: Mason Pearson Brush
Technically not French, but you can buy it for less expensive at City Parma than on Amazon so its worth mentioning. I'm beyond jealous of this pink one my mom got. Beyond.

The Magnificent Marché Aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

Welcome to the world's biggest flea market--Marche Aux Puces de Saint Ouen (Les Puces for short). It's actually 15 flea markets in one. My favorite being Vernaison which is the "cheapest" of the 15. Think well loved copper pots for 35 euro.

A map of all the stalls.  Remember this is only 1/15 of the whole flea market. You could literally spend weeks here

The best things to buy or dream about buying at Les Puces:

French Kitchen Canisters

 Vintage Costumes

 Antique Kitchen Trinkets

Frames Galore!

Old Keys

Antique Toys

Furniture

Tassels, Fabric, Buttons and Beads!  (my inner monologue)

Skulls!

 Hardware

Key chains?

And...

so...

much...

more!

oh and paintings! That's me with my new painting and the artist who made it. Luckily I have The Magnificent Mom here to take my picture and explore with me!

Once you have shopped til you drop, I highly recommend getting lunch at a place deep inside Vernaison called Chez Louisette. The food is mediocre (not helpful that after I ordered the goat cheese salad I realized that I am officially 'over' goat cheese. That's right people, my goat cheese allergy is back), but the atmosphere is kind of outrageous. Everyday, all day, is "open mic night" where anyone can sing and then pass around a box for money. Do not accidentally put a British pound in said box. It will swiftly be removed. Apparently the thought is not what counts here.

Hopefully when you are there, it will be someone's birthday.  This person was "very vintage" our waiter told us. I both fear and am excited for the day I turn vintage.
